When Tickling Becomes Abusive

‘Tickled to death,’ may not be as harmless a statement as most people think.

The latest survey of 84 college students revealed that only 32% of victims enjoy being tickled, with neutral responses from a further 32%, while 36% stated that they did not like being tickled at all.

Psychologists categorize tickling as being part of the fifth and highest grade of social play which includes cognitive interaction or special intimacy. Tickling is normally done in the circumstances of a loving or friendly relationship, intended as a bonding experience.

Laughter is usually a symbol of pleasure, so it is thought that the person being tickled is having a great time. However laughter resulting from being tickled is merely a re-action. The person being tickled is unable to stop laughing.

Scientists are not certain as to why people suddenly burst out laughing when tickled, but they do understand that laughter is healthy.

Analysis reveals that laughing improves blood flow and immune response; lessens the risk of heart disease, anxiety, blood pressure, anger, depression and stress and increases relaxation and sleep.

Laughter is not funny however, when it takes a form of abusive tickling.

Many people have reported they were tickled until they vomited, choked, cried, or wet their pants. One person thought of tickling as “The tickler has hijacked your body and you are powerless.”

When tickling is performed by a perpetrator who is stronger and bigger, or sometimes in groups or pairs of ticklers who “gang up” on the victim, is when it turns into abuse. This type of tickling has the aim of humiliating or dominating a victim. Ancient Rome and the Han Dynasty in China both used tickling as a method of torture, particularly as it left no marks on the victim.

There have been reports of people being driven insane through being tickled, or of laughing until they died of a heart attack, aneurysm, or some other pre-existing condition.

A victim’s bad tickling experience can carry over into later relationships. Some grown up children may find ways to get revenge on a parent. It may cause a woman to have difficulty trusting male partners, because she fears they too may turn out to be abusive ticklers.

Tickling that begins as laughter but ends up in tears is tickling to be avoided at all costs.
